विरूपम् यत् च मे रूपम् प्राप्तम् हि अविनयात् यथा ।
तत् मे शृणु नरव्याघ्र तत्त्वतः शंसतः तव ॥३-७०-१९॥
Virūpam yat ca me rūpam prāptam hi avinayāt yathā । Tat me śṛṇu naravyāghra tattvataḥ śaṃsataḥ tava ॥ ॥3-70-19॥
Translation
"O tiger among men! Listen to me as I truthfully narrate how I obtained this deformed appearance due to my own misconduct."

"हे नरव्याघ्र! जिस प्रकार अपने अविनय (उदंडता/पाप) के कारण मुझे यह विद्रूप रूप प्राप्त हुआ, वह मैं आपको यथार्थ रूप से बता रहा हूँ, सुनिए।"
English Commentary
Before beginning his backstory, Kabandha confesses his fault. He uses the term avinayāt (from lack of humility/misconduct), acknowledging that his arrogance led to his downfall. Instead of blaming fate entirely, he accepts responsibility for his actions. His promise to speak tattvataḥ (truthfully/factually) establishes credibility for the tale he is about to weave. This verse underscores the karmic principle that one's current state is a result of past actions.
