Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पितामह वचः सत्यम् तत् अस्ति इति मम अब्रवीत् ।
अनाहारः कथम् शक्तो भग्न सक्थि शिरो मुखः ॥३-७१-१२॥
Pitāmaha vacaḥ satyam tat asti iti mama abravīt । Anāhāraḥ katham śakto bhagna sakthi śiro mukhaḥ ॥ ॥3-71-12॥
Translation
"Indra told me, 'That word of the Grandsire is true (so you must live).' (I asked), 'How can I survive without food, with broken legs and my head and mouth (stuck inside)?'"
हिंदी अनुवाद
"इन्द्र ने मुझसे कहा— 'पितामह (ब्रह्मा) का वह वचन सत्य है (इसलिए तुम नहीं मरोगे)।' (तब मैंने पूछा)— 'टूटी जंघाओं और (अंदर धंसे) सिर-मुख वाला मैं बिना भोजन के कैसे जीवित रह सकूँगा?'"
English Commentary
A practical dilemma is presented here. While Indra honored Brahma's boon by sparing his life, the Vajra had rendered Kabandha incapacitated. Kabandha argues: if he is destined to live long, how can he sustain himself without the ability to move or eat, given his mouth is buried inside his chest? Anāhāraḥ (without food), survival is misery. This logical plea compels Indra to modify Kabandha's physiology to allow for his sustenance.

यहाँ एक व्यावहारिक समस्या प्रस्तुत की गई है। इन्द्र ने ब्रह्मा के वरदान का सम्मान करते हुए उसे जीवन तो दिया, लेकिन वज्र ने उसे अक्षम बना दिया था। कबन्ध तर्क करता है कि यदि उसे लम्बा जीवन जीना ही है, तो बिना हाथ-पैर और बिना मुख के वह भोजन कैसे करेगा? 'अनाहारः' (बिना आहार के) जीवन असंभव है। यह प्रश्न इन्द्र को विवश करता है कि वे उसके जीवित रहने के लिए कोई व्यवस्था करें।
