प्रोवाच कुशलो वक्तुम् वक्तारम् अपि राघवम् ।
दिव्यम् अस्ति न मे ज्ञानम् न अभिजानामि मैथिलीम् ॥ ॥३-७१-२७॥
Provāca kuśalo vaktum vaktāram api rāghavam |
Divyam asti na me jñānam na abhijānāmi maithilīm ॥3-71-27॥
Translation
Skilled in speech, he spoke to Raghava, who was himself the best of speakers: "I do not possess divine knowledge (currently), nor do I know Maithili."
हिंदी अनुवाद
बोलने में कुशल उस (कबंध) ने वक्ताओं में श्रेष्ठ राघव से कहा— "इस समय मेरे पास दिव्य ज्ञान नहीं है, (इसलिए) मैं मैथिली (सीता) के विषय में नहीं जानता।"
English Commentary
Kabandha's honesty is notable here. He does not offer Rama false hope. He admits that in his current cursed and Tamasic body, his divine vision has vanished. Addressing Raghava, who is the best of speakers, Kabandha also displays eloquence. He doesn't simply say "no," but explains the reason for his inability. This verse illustrates how sin and curses can blunt intelligence and perception. As long as he remains in this grotesque form, he is incapable of accessing his supernatural clairvoyance to locate Sita.

कबंध की ईमानदारी यहाँ दृष्टव्य है। वह राम को झूठा आश्वासन नहीं देता। वह स्वीकार करता है कि अपने वर्तमान शापित और तामसिक शरीर में, उसकी दिव्य दृष्टि लुप्त हो चुकी है। 'वक्तारम् अपि राघवम्'—राघव जो स्वयं श्रेष्ठ वक्ता हैं, उनसे बात करते हुए कबंध भी वाकपटुता का परिचय देता है। वह सीधे 'ना' नहीं कहता, बल्कि अपनी असमर्थता का कारण बताता है। यह श्लोक स्पष्ट करता है कि पाप और शाप से बुद्धि और विवेक कैसे कुंठित हो जाते हैं। जब तक वह इस तामसिक देह में है, वह भूत-भविष्य देखने में असमर्थ है।
