ऋषीन् वन गतान् राम त्रासयामि ततः ततः ।
ततः स्थूलशिरा नाम महर्षिः कोपितो मया ॥३-७१-३॥
Ṛṣīn vana gatān rāma trāsayāmi tataḥ tataḥ । Tataḥ sthūlaśirā nāma maharṣiḥ kopito mayā ॥ ॥3-71-3॥
Translation
"O Rama! I used to scare the sages dwelling in the forest here and there. Then, the great sage named Sthulashira was angered by me."

"हे राम! मैं वन में रहने वाले ऋषियों को यहाँ-वहाँ डराया करता था। तदनन्तर, एक बार 'स्थूलशिरा' नामक महर्षि मेरे द्वारा क्रोधित कर दिए गए।"
English Commentary
Kabandha provides a specific instance of his transgression. He targeted not just commoners but ascetics dedicated to penance. The mention of the sage Sthulashira by name grounds the story in specific lore. Harassing sages is a recurring motif in the Ramayana that leads to the downfall of powerful beings. In his hubris, Kabandha failed to realize that the spiritual power (Tapas) of a sage could be far more destructive than his own physical might.

कबन्ध अपने अपराध का विशिष्ट उदाहरण देता है। वह केवल पशुओं या सामान्य जनों को नहीं, बल्कि तपोनिष्ठ ऋषियों को भी सताता था। 'स्थूलशिरा' ऋषि का नाम उल्लेखित है, जो इस कथा की ऐतिहासिकता और विशिष्टता को पुष्ट करता है। ऋषियों को सताना रामायण में अक्सर राक्षसों के विनाश का कारण बनता है। कबन्ध ने अपनी शक्ति के मद में यह नहीं सोचा कि एक तपस्वी का क्रोध उसके शारीरिक बल से अधिक विनाशकारी हो सकता है।
