Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
संचिन्वन् विविधम् वन्यम् रूपेण अनेन धर्षितः ।
तेन अहम् उक्तः प्रेक्ष्य एवम् घोर शाप अभिधायिना ॥३-७१-४॥
Saṃcinvan vividham vanyam rūpeṇa anena dharṣitaḥ । Tena aham uktaḥ prekṣya evam ghora śāpa abhidhāyinā ॥ ॥3-71-4॥
Translation
"He was collecting various forest produce when he was assaulted by me in this form. Seeing me, he, the pronouncer of a terrible curse, spoke thus..."

"वे (ऋषि) वन की विविध कंद-मूल सामग्री एकत्र कर रहे थे, तब मैंने इसी (भयानक) रूप से उन पर आक्रमण (या अनादर) किया। मुझे देखकर, घोर शाप देने वाले उन ऋषि ने इस प्रकार कहा..."
English Commentary
The sage was engaged in the innocent act of gathering forest produce (saṃcinvan). Kabandha attacked or intimidated him (dharṣitaḥ) without provocation, highlighting his inherent cruelty. The sage immediately saw through the disguise or simply reacted to the malice. The descriptor ghora śāpa abhidhāyinā (one who pronounces a terrible curse) sets the tone for the severity of the punishment. It illustrates that the sage's reaction was swift and spiritually potent.

ऋषि कोई आक्रामक कार्य नहीं कर रहे थे; वे केवल 'संचिन्वन्' (इकट्ठा कर रहे थे) वन सामग्री। कबन्ध ने अकारण उन पर हमला किया या उन्हें डराया ('धर्षितः')। यह उसकी क्रूरता को दर्शाता है। ऋषि ने उसे देखा और तत्काल समझ लिया कि यह कोई साधारण प्राणी नहीं बल्कि एक अहंकारी गंधर्व है जो दुष्टता कर रहा है। 'घोर शाप अभिधायिना' बताता है कि ऋषि का तेज इतना था कि उनका वाणी अमोघ थी।
