इन्द्र कोपात् इदम् रूपम् प्राप्तम् एवम् रण आजिरे ।
अहम् हि तपसा उग्रेण पितामहम् अतोषयम् ॥३-७१-८॥
Indra kopāt idam rūpam prāptam evam raṇa ājire । Aham hi tapasā ugreṇa pitāmaham atoṣayam ॥ ॥3-71-8॥
Translation
"Also, through Indra's anger in the battlefield, I obtained this form. (For) I had pleased the Grandsire (Brahma) with terrible penance."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"(ऋषि के शाप के अलावा) इन्द्र के कोप से भी मुझे युद्ध भूमि में यह (शारीरिक विकृति वाला) रूप प्राप्त हुआ। (बात यह थी कि) मैंने उग्र तपस्या से पितामह (ब्रह्मा) को संतुष्ट किया था।"
English Commentary
A new layer is added to the backstory. While the sage cursed him to be a monster, the specific physical deformity (head in chest) resulted from Indra's anger in battle. Kabandha explains he had performed severe penance (tapas) to please Brahma. This follows the classic trope of powerful beings seeking boons from the Creator to become invincible. The mention of raṇa ājire (in the battlefield) indicates a physical clash with the King of Gods, which led to his peculiar anatomy.

यहाँ कथा में एक नया मोड़ आता है। ऋषि ने उसे 'राक्षस' होने का शाप दिया था, लेकिन उसका सिर पेट में क्यों है, यह 'इन्द्र कोप' का परिणाम है। कबन्ध बताता है कि उसने ब्रह्मा जी की तपस्या की थी। यह राक्षसों और असुरों की एक सामान्य प्रवृत्ति है—शक्ति पाने के लिए ब्रह्मा की तपस्या करना। 'रण आजिरे' (युद्ध के मैदान में) संकेत देता है कि इन्द्र के साथ उसका सीधा संघर्ष हुआ था। यह श्लोक उसकी शारीरिक विकृति (कबन्ध रूप) का कारण समझाने के लिए पृष्ठभूमि तैयार करता है।
