अद्रोहाय समागम्य दीप्यमाने विभावसौ ।
न च ते सो अवमन्तव्यः सुग्रीवो वानर अधिपः ॥ ॥३-७२-१८॥
Adrohāya samāgamya dīpyamāne vibhāvasau । Na ca te so avamantavyaḥ sugrīvo vānara adhipaḥ ॥ ॥3-72-18॥
Translation
For the sake of non-betrayal (lasting friendship), unite with him while the fire is blazing (as witness). And that Lord of Vanaras, Sugriva, should not be looked down upon by you.

अटूट मित्रता के लिए प्रज्वलित अग्नि (विभावसु) की साक्षी में उनसे संधि करना। और वह वानरराज सुग्रीव तुम्हारे द्वारा अपमानित (तिरस्कृत) नहीं किए जाने चाहिए।
English Commentary
This verse contains the prescriptive ritual for the famous Rama-Sugriva alliance: dīpyamāne vibhāvasau (in the presence of the blazing fire). In Vedic tradition, Agni is the eternal witness (Sākṣī) to covenants; a pact made before fire is sacrosanct and binds the parties in Adroha (absence of treachery). Kabandha adds a crucial diplomatic caveat: do not underestimate or show contempt (avamantavyaḥ) for Sugriva. Rama might be tempted to view a monkey-king as inferior to an Aryan prince, but Kabandha warns that Sugriva’s form disguises his true potency. Respect is the foundation of this partnership. This foreshadows the deep mutual respect that eventually develops between the two, erasing the barrier between human and Vanara.

यह श्लोक अग्नि-साक्षी मैत्री (Fire-witnessed alliance) के वैदिक विधान का संदर्भ देता है, जो राम और सुग्रीव की मित्रता का आधार बना। 'अद्रोहाय' का अर्थ है 'द्रोह न करने के लिए' यानी विश्वासघात से बचने के लिए। अग्नि को साक्षी मानकर की गई प्रतिज्ञा अटूट होती है। कबन्ध एक और महत्वपूर्ण चेतावनी देते हैं: 'न च ते सो अवमन्तव्यः'—सुग्रीव का अपमान नहीं करना चाहिए। यद्यपि सुग्रीव एक वानर हैं और राम एक मानव राजकुमार, तथापि सुग्रीव का अपना स्वाभिमान और शक्ति है। एक वनवासी समझकर उनकी उपेक्षा करना भारी भूल होगी। यह कूटनीतिक सलाह है कि अपने सहयोगी का सम्मान करना ही गठबंधन की सफलता की कुंजी है।
