कृतार्थो वा अकृतार्थो वा तव कृत्यम् करिष्यति ।
स ऋक्षरजसः पुत्रः पंपाम् अटति शन्कितः ॥ ॥३-७२-२०॥
Kṛtārtho vā akṛtārtho vā tava kṛtyam kariṣyati । Sa ṛkṣarajasaḥ putraḥ paṃpām aṭati śankitaḥ ॥ ॥3-72-20॥
Translation
Whether his own purpose is achieved or not, he will accomplish your task. That son of Riksharajas wanders around Pampa, filled with apprehension.
हिंदी अनुवाद
चाहे उनका अपना प्रयोजन सिद्ध हो या न हो, वे आपका कार्य (अवश्य) करेंगे। वह ऋक्षरजा के पुत्र (सुग्रीव) शंकित होकर पंपा सरोवर के आसपास घूमते रहते हैं।
English Commentary
This verse offers a profound guarantee: Sugriva’s commitment to Rama will transcend his own success or failure (Kṛtārtho vā akṛtārtho vā). Kabandha asserts that once the bond is formed, Sugriva will execute Rama's mission regardless of the outcome of his own feud with Vali. This sets a high expectation of loyalty. Identifying him as the 'son of Riksharajas' gives him a royal lineage. However, the word Śankitaḥ (apprehensive/doubtful) paints a vivid picture of a fugitive king, constantly looking over his shoulder, fearing his brother Vali. This explains why he wanders the Pampa region—it is a hideout. It warns Rama that his approach must be gentle, as Sugriva is currently living in a state of high anxiety.

'कृतार्थो वा अकृतार्थो वा'—यह सुग्रीव की निष्ठा का चरम प्रमाण है। कबन्ध का कहना है कि भले ही सुग्रीव का अपना कार्य (राज्य प्राप्ति) सफल न भी हो, फिर भी राम से जुड़ने के बाद वह राम का कार्य करेंगे। यह सुग्रीव के उच्च चरित्र को दर्शाता है। सुग्रीव को 'ऋक्षरजा' का पुत्र बताया गया है, जो वानर वंश की एक प्रमुख वंशावली है। 'शंकितः' (डरा हुआ/आशंकित) शब्द सुग्रीव की वर्तमान मानसिक स्थिति का यथार्थ चित्रण है—वे वाली के भय से निरंतर चौकन्ने रहते हैं और छिपते फिरते हैं। यह शब्द राम को यह भी बताता है कि सुग्रीव तक पहुँचते समय सावधानी बरतनी होगी क्योंकि वह किसी भी आगंतुक को वाली का गुप्तचर समझकर भाग सकते हैं।
