तत् शरीरम् कबन्धस्य घृत पिण्ड उपमम् महत् ।
मेदसा पच्यमानस्य मन्दम् दहति पावकः ॥३-७२-३॥
Tat śarīram kabandhasya ghṛta piṇḍa upamam mahat |
Medasā pacyamānasya mandam dahati pāvakaḥ ॥3-72-3॥
Translation
That massive body of Kabandha was like a mound of ghee. Being cooked by its own fat, the fire consumed it slowly.

कबंध का वह विशाल शरीर घी के पिंड के समान था। चर्बी (मेद) की अधिकता के कारण पकते हुए उस शरीर को आग धीरे-धीरे जला रही थी।
English Commentary
Valmiki Ramayana is known for its realistic and graphic descriptions. Here, the poet provides a visceral detail of the cremation. Kabandha’s body is compared to a 'ghrita pinda' (mound of ghee) due to its immense fat content. Because of this excess fat, the fire burns slowly ('mandam dahati'), melting the body rather than consuming it instantly. This imagery emphasizes the sheer grotesqueness of the cursed form that is finally being dissolved.

वाल्मीकि रामायण अपनी यथार्थवादी और विस्तृत वर्णन शैली के लिए प्रसिद्ध है। यहाँ कवि ने दाह संस्कार का अत्यंत भौतिक चित्रण किया है। कबंध का शरीर इतना मांसल और चर्बी युक्त था कि वह घी के ढेर जैसा प्रतीत हो रहा था। अत्यधिक वसा (fat) होने के कारण अग्नि उसे भभक कर नहीं, बल्कि धीरे-धीरे पिघलाते हुए जला रही थी ('मन्दम् दहति')। यह वर्णन उस वीभत्स राक्षस रूप के पूर्ण विनाश को दर्शाता है जो शाप का परिणाम था।
