Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
अथ पुष्कर पर्णेन लक्ष्मणः पाययिष्यति ।
स्थूलान् गिरि गुहा शय्यान् वानरान् वन चारिणः ॥ ॥३-७३-१८॥
Atha puṣkara parṇena lakṣmaṇaḥ pāyayiṣyati । Sthūlān giri guhā śayyān vānarān vana cāriṇaḥ ॥ ॥3-73-18॥
Translation
Then Lakshmana will make you drink water using a lotus leaf. [You will see] huge forest-dwelling monkeys who sleep in mountain caves.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तदनन्तर लक्ष्मण आपको कमल के पत्ते (पुष्कर पर्णेन) से जल पिलाएंगे। (वहाँ आप) वन में विचरण करने वाले और पहाड़ी गुफाओं में शयन करने वाले विशालकाय (स्थूल) वानरों को (देखेंगे)।
English Commentary
The act of drinking is rustic yet elegant, using a lotus leaf (puṣkara parṇena) as a cup. The second half of the verse shifts the gaze to the inhabitants of the region: the Vanaras. They are described as sthūlān (huge/stout) and giri guhā śayyān (those whose beds are mountain caves). This description distinguishes them from common wildlife; these are powerful beings accustomed to the rugged terrain. Kabandha is preparing Rama for his encounter with the Vanara race, hinting at the strength of the allies he is destined to meet.

पहली पंक्ति में लक्ष्मण द्वारा 'पुष्कर पर्ण' (कमल के पत्ते) का प्याला बनाकर जल पिलाने का सुंदर दृश्य है। दूसरी पंक्ति विषय बदलती है—अब कबंध उन जीवों का वर्णन कर रहा है जिनसे राम का सामना होगा। 'वानरान्' (वानरों) का उल्लेख कहानी को सुग्रीव की ओर ले जाता है। इन वानरों को 'गिरि गुहा शय्यान्' (गुफाओं में सोने वाले) और 'स्थूलान्' (विशाल) कहा गया है, जो यह बताता है कि ये सामान्य बंदर नहीं, बल्कि सुग्रीव की वानर सेना के शक्तिशाली सदस्य हो सकते हैं। यह राम के लिए सुग्रीव के लोगों का पहला परिचय (preview) है।
