Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
उत्पलानि च फुल्लानि पंकजानि च राघव ।
न तानि कश्चित् माल्यानि तत्र आरोपयिता नरः ॥ ॥३-७३-२२॥
Utpalāni ca phullāni paṅkajāni ca rāghava । Na tāni kaścit mālyāni tatra āropayitā naraḥ ॥ ॥3-73-22॥
Translation
O Raghava! There are blossoming blue lotuses and day lotuses. No man there wears those garlands (they remain untouched).
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे राघव! वहाँ खिले हुए नीलकमल (उत्पल) और कमल (पंकज) हैं। उन फूलों की मालाओं को वहाँ कोई भी मनुष्य धारण नहीं करता (वे अछूते हैं)।
English Commentary
Kabandha draws attention to the pristine condition of the flora. The utpalas (blue lotuses) and pankajas (common lotuses) are in full bloom, yet they remain unharvested and unworn by humans. This signifies the sanctity of the location; it is not a place for worldly enjoyment or decoration. The phrase na tāni kaścit... āropayitā (no one puts them on) establishes a sense of mystery and reverence. It implies that these flowers are reserved for a higher purpose or are protected by a spiritual law that forbids their desecration by common hands.

यहाँ से एक अद्भुत पौराणिक कथा का आरंभ होता है। कबंध बताता है कि पंपा के कमल अत्यंत सुंदर हैं, किन्तु 'न कश्चित् आरोपयिता'—कोई उन्हें धारण नहीं करता। इसका एक अर्थ यह है कि वह स्थान इतना पवित्र और निर्जन है कि वहां सामान्य मनुष्य नहीं जाते, और जो सिद्ध वहाँ रहते हैं, वे प्रकृति के साथ छेड़छाड़ नहीं करते। यह उस वन की कौमार्य (virginity/purity) और दिव्यता को दर्शाता है। यह श्लोक पाठकों के मन में जिज्ञासा उत्पन्न करता है कि आखिर इतने सुंदर फूल तोड़े क्यों नहीं जाते, जिसका उत्तर अगले श्लोकों में 'मतंग शिष्यों' की कथा के माध्यम से दिया जाएगा।
