सिक्ता रुधिर धाराभिः संहत्य परम द्विपाः ।
प्रचरन्ति पृथक् कीर्णा मेघ वर्णाः तरस्विनः ॥३-७३-३६॥
siktā rudhira dhārābhiḥ saṃhatya parama dvipāḥ |
pracaranti pṛthak kīrṇā megha varṇāḥ tarasvinaḥ ॥3-73-36॥
Translation
Those excellent elephants, colored like rain clouds and swift in motion, wander separately after being drenched in streams of blood from striking against each other.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मेघों के समान रंग वाले, वेगवान और श्रेष्ठ हाथी आपस में लड़कर (या वृक्षों से रगड़ खाकर) रक्त की धाराओं से सिक्त होकर अलग-अलग विचरण करते हैं।
English Commentary
This verse vividly portrays the raw power and majesty of the elephants in the Matanga forest. Describing them as "cloud-colored" connects them to the monsoon and fertility. The mention of them being drenched in "streams of blood" (rudhira dhara) is indicative of their vigorous play, rut (musth), or rubbing against rough trees and mineral-rich rocks, rather than malicious violence. It signifies an abundance of energy and health in the wildlife there. Kabandha presents this imagery to emphasize that the region is not desolate; it is supported by a robust ecosystem capable of sustaining such magnificent and powerful creatures.

यहाँ हाथियों के बल और मत्तता का वर्णन है। 'रुधिर धाराभिः' (रक्त की धाराओं से) का अर्थ यहाँ युद्ध की हिंसा नहीं, बल्कि उनके अतिशय बल और क्रीड़ा का द्योतक है, जहाँ वे एक-दूसरे से टकराते हैं या वृक्षों से शरीर रगड़ते हैं जिससे गेरू आदि रंग या उनका अपना रक्त बह निकलता है। यह हाथियों के 'मत्त' होने की निशानी है, जो उस वन की समृद्धि को दर्शाता है। 'मेघ वर्णाः' (बादल के रंग वाले) विशेषण उनकी विशालता और श्याम वर्ण की सुंदरता को बताता है। यह दृश्य उस वन की भव्यता और वहां के प्राणियों की शक्ति को श्रीराम के समक्ष प्रस्तुत करता है।
