रामेण तापसी पृष्ठा सा सिद्धा सिद्ध सम्मता ।
शशंस शबरी वृद्धा रामाय प्रति अवस्थिता ॥३-७४-१०॥
rāmeṇa tāpasī pṛṣṭhā sā siddhā siddha sammatā |
śaśaṃsa śabarī vṛddhā rāmāya prati avasthitā ॥3-74-10॥
Translation
Being questioned thus by Rama, that Siddha ascetic woman Shabari, who was respected by the Siddhas, standing before him, replied to Rama.

राम द्वारा इस प्रकार पूछे जाने पर, सिद्धों द्वारा सम्मानित वह सिद्धा वृद्धा तपस्विनी शबरी, राम के सामने खड़ी होकर उनसे बोली।
English Commentary
This verse sets the stage for Shabari's response. Valmiki reinforces her credentials one last time before she speaks: she is Siddha sammata (respected even by the perfected ones) and Vriddha (elderly/wise). This accumulation of honorifics serves to dismantle any prejudice the reader might have regarding her background. She is presented as an elder stateswoman of spirituality. Standing before Rama (prati avasthita), she prepares to speak, not with fear, but with the confidence of one whose penance has been recognized by the Lord himself. The verse captures the gravitas of the moment before her famous dialogue begins.

यह श्लोक शबरी के उत्तर की भूमिका है। वाल्मीकि जी पुनः विशेषणों की झड़ी लगाते हैं—'सिद्धा' (सिद्ध योगिनी), 'सिद्ध सम्मता' (अन्य सिद्धों द्वारा भी सम्मानित), और 'वृद्धा' (वयोवृद्ध)। ये विशेषण बताते हैं कि शबरी का सम्मान आध्यात्मिक जगत में बहुत ऊँचा था। वह केवल राम की भक्त नहीं, बल्कि एक ज्ञानवृद्धा थीं। 'प्रति अवस्थिता' (सामने खड़ी होकर) शबरी उत्तर देती हैं। यह संवाद दो महान आत्माओं के बीच का है। शबरी का उत्तर (जो अगले श्लोकों में आएगा) उनकी कृतज्ञता और जीवन की पूर्णता को व्यक्त करेगा।
