पाद्यम् आचमनीयम् च सर्वम् प्रददात् यथा विधि ।
ताम् उवाच ततो रामः श्रमणीम् धर्म संस्थिताम् ॥३-७४-७॥
pādyam ācamanīyam ca sarvam pradadāt yathā vidhi |
tām uvāca tato rāmaḥ śramaṇīm dharma saṃsthitām ॥3-74-7॥
Translation
She offered water for washing feet, water for sipping, and everything else in accordance with the scriptures. Then Rama spoke to that ascetic woman who was established in Dharma.

Shabari’s hospitality is not random; it is described as yatha vidhi (per scriptural injunctions). She offers padya and achamana, the standard ritual welcome for honored guests in the Vedic tradition. This reinforces her status as a knowledgeable ascetic living a disciplined life. Rama reciprocates this respect. He sees her as Dharma samsthitam (firmly established in Dharma) and Shramanim (a female ascetic). He initiates conversation not with condescension, but with the reverence due to a spiritual practitioner. This sets the tone for a dialogue between two spiritually advanced beings.
