Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पद्म सौगन्धिकैः ताम्राम् शुक्लाम् कुमुद मण्डलैः ।
नीलाम् कुवलय उद् घाटैः बहु वर्णाम् कुथाम् इव ॥ ॥३-७५-२०॥
Padma saugandhikaiḥ tāmrām śuklām kumuda maṇḍalaiḥ |
Nīlām kuvalaya ud ghāṭaiḥ bahu varṇām kuthām iva ॥3-75-20॥
Translation
It appeared coppery-red with red lotuses and fragrant flowers, white with clusters of white water-lilies, and blue with blooming blue water-lilies; thus, it looked like a multi-colored carpet.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह (कहीं) लाल कमलों और सौगन्धिक पुष्पों से ताम्रवर्ण (लाल) थी, (कहीं) कुमुद के समूहों से श्वेत थी, और (कहीं) खिले हुए नीलकमलों से नीली थी। इस प्रकार वह बहुरंगी गलीचे (कुथा) के समान लग रही थी।
English Commentary
This verse presents a painterly description of the lake surface. The diverse colors of the lotuses—copper-red (Padma), white (Kumuda), and blue (Kuvalaya)—create a mosaic effect. Valmiki uses the simile 'Kutham iva' (like a multi-colored carpet or rug) to describe the water surface. This imagery suggests richness and luxury, usually associated with royal palaces, now found naturally in the wild. It emphasizes the density of the bloom, suggesting that the water was almost invisible beneath the floral tapestry.

यह श्लोक एक चित्रकार की दृष्टि से लिखा गया है। सरोवर के पानी के रंग-बिरंगे फूलों से ढके होने की तुलना 'कुथाम् इव' (रंग-बिरंगे गलीचे या आसन) से की गई है। ताम्र (लाल), शुक्ल (सफेद) और नील (नीले) रंगों का मिश्रण एक अद्भुत दृश्य उपस्थित करता है। यह उपमा (Simile) अत्यंत सटीक है क्योंकि जैसे गलीचा भूमि को ढक लेता है, वैसे ही पुष्पों ने जल की सतह को ढक लिया था। प्रकृति की यह सजावट राम के स्वागत के लिए बिछाई गई प्रतीत होती है, किन्तु वियोगी राम के लिए यह सौंदर्य व्यर्थ सा है।
