Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
इति एवम् उक्त्वा मदन अभिपीडितः स लक्ष्मणम् वाक्यम् अनन्य चेतनः ।
विवेश पंपाम् नलिनी मनो रमाम् तम् उत्तमम् शोकम् उदीरयाणः ॥ ॥३-७५-२९॥
iti evam uktvā madana abhipīḍitaḥ sa lakṣmaṇam vākyam ananya cetanaḥ |
viveśa pampām nalinī mano ramām tam uttamam śokam udīrayāṇaḥ ॥3-75-29॥
Translation
Having spoken thus to Lakshmana, tormented by love and with a mind focused on no one else (but Sita), he entered the delightful lotus-filled Pampa, giving voice to his supreme grief.
हिंदी अनुवाद
कामदेव (मदन) से पीड़ित और सीता में ही एकनिष्ठ चित्त वाले राम, लक्ष्मण से ऐसा वचन कहकर, अपना परम शोक प्रकट करते हुए उस मनोरम कमलों वाली पंपा (सरोवर क्षेत्र) में प्रविष्ट हुए।
English Commentary
This verse beautifully encapsulates the juxtaposition of external beauty and internal agony. Rama is described as Madana abhipīḍitaḥ (tormented by the god of love) and Ananya cetanaḥ (having a mind fixed on no other object—meaning Sita). Despite the inviting description of Pampa as Mano-ramam (delightful/pleasing to the mind) and filled with lotuses (nalini), Rama enters it carrying "supreme grief" (uttamam shokam). The act of entering the lake is usually associated with leisure and joy, but here it is framed by his lamentations. Valmiki uses this imagery to show that without the beloved, even the most enchanting aspects of nature become sources of pain. It sets a melancholic tone right before the narrative fully enters the Kishkindha Kanda.

यह श्लोक राम की मानसिक दशा का सजीव चित्रण है। 'मदन अभिपीडितः' (कामदेव द्वारा पीड़ित) और 'अनन्य चेतनः' (जिसका चित्त किसी अन्य में न लगा हो) पद यह स्पष्ट करते हैं कि राम का प्रेम लौकिक आकर्षण से ऊपर, एकनिष्ठ और गहरा है। वे पंपा सरोवर में प्रवेश तो करते हैं, जो 'मनोरमा' (मन को रमाने वाली) है, किंतु उनका उद्देश्य विहार करना नहीं, बल्कि अपने शोक को व्यक्त करना है। 'उत्तमम् शोकम् उदीरयाणः' का अर्थ है कि वे अपने गहरे दुख को शब्दों और भावों में प्रकट कर रहे थे। यहाँ प्रकृति के सौंदर्य और राम के विषाद के बीच का विरोधाभास (Contrast) अत्यंत मार्मिक है। राम का शरीर सुंदर वन में प्रवेश कर रहा है, परन्तु उनका मन विरह की अग्नि में जल रहा है।
