Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
पश्य आश्रम पदम् रम्यम् दण्डकारण्य वासिनाम् ।
एषाम् तपस्विनाम् वीर तपसा भावित आत्मनाम् ॥३-८-१२॥
paśya āśrama padam ramyam daṇḍakāraṇya vāsinām । eṣām tapasvinām vīra tapasā bhāvita ātmanām ॥3-8-12॥
Translation
O Hero! Behold the beautiful hermitage grounds of these ascetics residing in the Dandaka forest, whose souls have been purified through penance.

हे वीर! दंडकारण्य में निवास करने वाले और तपस्या से अपनी आत्मा को शुद्ध (भावित) करने वाले इन तपस्वियों के सुंदर आश्रमों को देखो।
English Commentary
Sage Sutikshna invites Rama to observe the serene beauty of the hermitages scattered across the Dandaka forest. Addressing Rama as 'Vira' (Hero), he implicitly connects the beauty of the place with the need to protect it. The description of the ascetics as tapasā bhāvita ātmanām (those whose souls are sanctified/purified by penance) elevates the scenery from mere physical beauty to spiritual sublimity. The sage wants Rama to appreciate what is at stake; these hermitages represent centers of spiritual power and peace that are under threat. It is an orientation for Rama, showing him the community he has vowed to defend. The verse juxtaposes the external beauty of the āśrama padam (hermitage grounds) with the internal beauty of the sages' purified souls, suggesting that the environment reflects the consciousness of its inhabitants.
