Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
तावत् इच्छामहे गन्तुम् इति उक्त्वा चरणौ मुनेः ।
ववन्दे सह सौमित्रिः सीतया सह राघवः ॥३-८-९॥
tāvat icchāmahe gantum iti uktvā caraṇau muneḥ । vavande saha saumitriḥ sītayā saha rāghavaḥ ॥3-8-9॥
Translation
"We wish to depart by then (before the heat increases)," saying this, Raghava (Rama), along with Sita and Saumitri (Lakshmana), bowed down to the feet of the sage.

"तभी तक (धूप तीखी होने से पूर्व) हम जाना चाहते हैं," ऐसा कहकर रघुनंदन राम ने सीता और लक्ष्मण सहित मुनि सुतीक्ष्ण के चरणों की वंदना की।
English Commentary
This verse illustrates the exemplary conduct and humility of Rama. Despite being a warrior prince of high stature, he strictly adheres to the etiquette of the hermitage. By stating "we wish to depart" (icchāmahe), he respectfully seeks permission rather than announcing a decision, acknowledging the sage's authority over the guest. The act of bowing to the sage's feet along with Sita and Lakshmana signifies their collective reverence and unity. The use of the patronymic 'Raghava' serves to remind us of the Raghu lineage's tradition of honoring elders and sages. This moment captures the formal yet affectionate leave-taking ritual in Vedic culture, where the blessing of the host is sought before embarking on a journey. यह श्लोक राम की विनम्रता और शिष्टाचार को प्रदर्शित करता है। यद्यपि राम स्वयं एक महापराक्रमी क्षत्रिय और अवतार हैं, फिर भी वे आश्रम मर्यादा का पूर्ण पालन करते हैं। 'इच्छामहे' (हम इच्छा करते हैं) शब्द का प्रयोग करके वे ऋषि की अनुमति का सम्मान कर रहे हैं, न कि अपनी इच्छा थोप रहे हैं। सीता और लक्ष्मण के साथ मिलकर चरण स्पर्श करना यह दिखाता है कि वे तीनों एक इकाई (Unit) की तरह कार्य कर रहे थे और उन सभी के मन में ऋषियों के प्रति समान श्रद्धा थी। यहाँ 'राघव' शब्द का प्रयोग रघुकुल की उस परंपरा को इंगित करता है जहाँ बड़ों का सम्मान सर्वोपरि है। यह प्रस्थान का दृश्य है, जहाँ अतिथि और यजमान के बीच के स्नेहपूर्ण संबंधों की परिणति विदाई में हो रही है। यह आचरण गृहस्थ और वानप्रस्थ आश्रमों के बीच के आदर्श संबंधों को भी दर्शाता है।
