प्रतिज्ञातः त्वया वीर दण्डकारण्य वासिनाम् ।
ऋषीणाम् रक्षणार्थाय वधः संयति रक्षसाम् ॥३-९-१०॥
pratijñātaḥ tvayā vīra daṇḍakāraṇya vāsinām |
ṛṣīṇām rakṣaṇārthāya vadhaḥ saṃyati rakṣasām ॥3-9-10॥
Translation
O Hero! You have promised to kill the Rakshasas in battle for the protection of the Rishis dwelling in the Dandaka forest.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे वीर! आपने दंडकारण्य में निवास करने वाले ऋषियों की रक्षा के लिए युद्ध में राक्षसों के वध करने की प्रतिज्ञा कर ली है।
English Commentary
Sita here identifies the root cause of her anxiety. Rama had previously vowed to the sages (like Sarabhanga) to eliminate the Rakshasas to ensure the ascetics' safety. Sita, possessing a gentle heart and keen intellect, differentiates between the Dharma of a King on a throne and an ascetic in the woods. By addressing him as 'Vira' (Hero), she acknowledges his capability to fulfill the vow, but she questions the propriety of it in their current context. She highlights that this specific promise—killing demons to protect sages—is the catalyst that draws Rama toward violence, creating a conflict between his innate Kshatriya duty and the immediate Ashrama dharma (duty of the stage of life) of a forest dweller.

सीता जी यहाँ उस मूल कारण को स्पष्ट कर रही हैं जो उनकी चिंता का विषय है। श्रीराम ने शरभंग आदि मुनियों और अन्य तपस्वियों को अभयदान देते हुए राक्षसों के विनाश का संकल्प लिया था। सीता जी, जो अत्यंत कोमल हृदय की हैं, मानती हैं कि क्षत्रिय धर्म का पालन अयोध्या के सिंहासन पर तो उचित है, किन्तु तपोवन में नहीं। वे श्रीराम को 'वीर' कहकर संबोधित करती हैं, यह स्वीकारते हुए कि श्रीराम में यह कार्य करने की क्षमता है, परन्तु प्रश्न क्षमता का नहीं, बल्कि औचित्य का है। वे याद दिला रही हैं कि यह प्रतिज्ञा ही अब उन्हें हिंसा के मार्ग पर ले जाएगी, जो वनवास के नियमों के विपरीत हो सकता है।
