पुरा किल महाबाहो तपस्वी सत्य वाक् शुचिः ।
कस्मिन् चित् अभवत् पुण्ये वने रत मृग द्विजे ॥३-९-१६॥
purā kila mahābāho tapasvī satya vāk śuciḥ |
kasmin cit abhavat puṇye vane rata mṛga dvije ॥3-9-16॥
Translation
O Mighty-armed one! Indeed, in ancient times, in a certain holy forest where deer and birds lived in delight, there resided an ascetic who was truthful in speech and pure in conduct.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे महाबाहु! प्राचीन काल की बात है, किसी पवित्र वन में, जहाँ मृग और पक्षी प्रेमपूर्वक रहते थे, एक सत्यवादी और पवित्र आचरण वाला तपस्वी रहता था।
English Commentary
To substantiate her argument (that association with weapons corrupts the mind), Sita begins to narrate an ancient parable. She describes an ascetic who was 'satyavak' (truthful) and 'shuchi' (pure). The forest environment was also holy and non-violent, where animals lived without fear. The purpose of setting this scene is to demonstrate that even for such a pure individual in such a serene environment, a fall from grace is possible if a corrupting object (a weapon) enters their life. This story is being presented as a cautionary tale specifically tailored for Rama.

अपने तर्क (कि शस्त्र का संग बुद्धि को भ्रष्ट कर देता है) को सिद्ध करने के लिए सीता जी अब एक प्राचीन कथा (दृष्टांत) सुनाना आरम्भ करती हैं। वे एक ऐसे तपस्वी का वर्णन करती हैं जो 'सत्यवाक्' (सत्य बोलने वाला) और 'शुचि' (पवित्र) था। वन का वातावरण भी 'पुण्य' और अहिंसक था जहाँ पशु-पक्षी निर्भय होकर रहते थे। इस पृष्ठभूमि को बनाने का उद्देश्य यह दिखाना है कि इतना पवित्र व्यक्ति और इतना शांत वातावरण होने पर भी, पतन संभव है यदि कोई गलत वस्तु (शस्त्र) जीवन में प्रवेश कर जाए। यह कथा श्रीराम के लिए एक चेतावनी (cautionary tale) के रूप में प्रस्तुत की जा रही है।
