एवम् एतत् पुरा वृत्तम् शस्त्र संयोग कारणम् ।
अग्नि संयोगवत् हेतुः शस्त्र संयोग उच्यते ॥३-९-२३॥
evam etat purā vṛttam śastra saṃyoga kāraṇam |
agni saṃyogavat hetuḥ śastra saṃyoga ucyate ॥3-9-23॥
Translation
Such was the event that occurred in the past due to contact with a weapon. Just as contact with fire is a cause (for burning), contact with a weapon is said to be a cause (for mental change/violence).
हिंदी अनुवाद
प्राचीन काल में शस्त्र के संयोग (संपर्क) के कारण यह घटना घटी थी। जैसे अग्नि का संयोग (जलाने का) कारण होता है, वैसे ही शस्त्र का संयोग भी (मन में विकार उत्पन्न करने का) हेतु कहा जाता है।
English Commentary
Sita now presents the moral of the story to Rama, reiterating the fire analogy. Just as feeling heat is inevitable when close to fire, the influx of fierceness into the mind is a natural law when in contact with weapons. She frames this not as a personal opinion but as a universal truth ('uchyate' - it is said). This verse reinforces her argument that Rama’s constant armed state in the Dandaka forest poses a metaphysical danger to his ascetic vow, equating the weapon’s influence to an elemental force like fire that transforms whatever it touches.

सीता जी अब कथा का सार (Moral of the story) श्रीराम के समक्ष रखती हैं। वे पुनः अग्नि के दृष्टांत को दोहराती हैं। जैसे अग्नि के पास जाने पर ताप का अनुभव होना अपरिहार्य है, वैसे ही शस्त्र के संपर्क में रहने पर चित्त में क्रूरता का संचार होना भी एक प्राकृतिक नियम है। वे इसे एक व्यक्तिगत राय नहीं, बल्कि एक सार्वभौमिक सत्य ('उच्यते' - कहा जाता है) के रूप में प्रस्तुत करती हैं। यह श्लोक उनके तर्कों की पुष्टि करता है कि दंडकारण्य में श्रीराम का निरंतर सशस्त्र रहना उनके ऋषिवत जीवन के लिए घातक हो सकता है।
