धर्मात् अर्थः प्रभवति धर्मात् प्रभवते सुखम् ।
धर्मेण लभते सर्वम् धर्म सारम् इदम् जगत् ॥३-९-३०॥
dharmāt arthaḥ prabhavati dharmāt prabhavate sukham |
dharmeṇa labhate sarvam dharma sāram idam jagat ॥3-9-30॥
Translation
From Dharma arises wealth; from Dharma arises happiness. By Dharma, one attains everything; Dharma is the essence of this world.
हिंदी अनुवाद
धर्म से ही अर्थ की प्राप्ति होती है, धर्म से ही सुख मिलता है। धर्म से ही सब कुछ प्राप्त होता है; यह संसार धर्म-सार ही है (धर्म ही इसका मूल है)।
English Commentary
This is one of the most celebrated and pivotal verses in Valmiki Ramayana. Sita articulates the core axiom of Indian philosophy regarding the Purusharthas (goals of life). While people often compromise Dharma to gain Artha (wealth) or Kama (pleasure), Sita clarifies that wealth and happiness are merely by-products of Dharma. Dharma is the root; if the root is nourished, the fruits will naturally follow. She reminds Rama that while killing demons might seem like a pragmatic necessity, if it contains a subtle trace of Adharma (unprovoked violence), it will ultimately lead to sorrow. This verse serves as the moral backbone of the epic.

यह वाल्मीकि रामायण के सबसे प्रसिद्ध और महत्वपूर्ण श्लोकों में से एक है। सीता जी यहाँ भारतीय दर्शन के मूल सिद्धांत 'पुरुषार्थ' को परिभाषित कर रही हैं। लोग प्रायः अर्थ और काम (सुख) के लिए धर्म को छोड़ देते हैं, किन्तु सीता जी स्पष्ट करती हैं कि अर्थ और काम तो धर्म के फल (by-products) मात्र हैं। मूल वृक्ष धर्म है। यदि जड़ (धर्म) सुरक्षित है, तो फल (सुख) अवश्य मिलेंगे। सीता जी श्रीराम को याद दिला रही हैं कि यद्यपि राक्षसों का वध करना एक व्यावहारिक आवश्यकता लग सकती है, किन्तु यदि उसमें सूक्ष्म अधर्म (बिना वैर के हिंसा) है, तो वह अंततः दुख का कारण बनेगा। यह श्लोक रामायण का नैतिक मेरुदंड है।
