तच्च सर्वम् महाबाहो शक्यम् वोढुम् जितेइन्द्रियैः ।
तव वश्य इन्द्रियत्वम् च जानामि शुभदर्शन ॥३-९-८॥
tacca sarvam mahābāho śakyam voḍhum jitendriyaiḥ |
tava vaśyendriyatvam ca jānāmi śubhadarśana ॥3-9-8॥
Translation
O Mighty-armed one! All this (adherence to righteousness and endurance) can only be borne by those who have conquered their senses. O handsome one, I also know that your senses are completely under your control.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे महाबाहु! यह सब (धर्म पालन और कष्ट सहन) जितेंद्रिय पुरुषों द्वारा ही वहन किया जा सकता है। हे शुभदर्शन! मैं यह भी जानती हूँ कि समस्त इंद्रियाँ आपके वश में हैं।
English Commentary
Here, Sita acknowledges the greatness of Rama’s character and his immense self-control. By addressing him as 'Mahabaho' (Mighty-armed), she recognizes his strength, and by 'Shubhadarshana' (One with an auspicious appearance), she appeals to his gentle nature. Sita’s intent is not to criticize Rama but to prepare him for a subtle warning. She affirms that he is 'jitendriya' (one who has conquered his senses), meaning lust, anger, or greed cannot easily sway him. However, she establishes this premise because she intends to argue that carrying weapons in the forest and vowing to kill demons without direct personal enmity poses a severe test to this very self-control. It is a respectful preamble by a devoted wife concerned for her husband’s spiritual integrity.

यहाँ माता सीता श्रीराम के चरित्र की महानता और उनके संयम को स्वीकार कर रही हैं। वे श्रीराम को 'महाबाहु' कहकर उनके क्षत्रिय बल को और 'शुभदर्शन' कहकर उनके सौम्य व्यक्तित्व को संबोधित करती हैं। सीता जी का उद्देश्य श्रीराम की आलोचना करना नहीं, बल्कि एक सूक्ष्म खतरे की ओर इशारा करना है। वे जानती हैं कि श्रीराम 'जितेंद्रिय' हैं, अर्थात काम, क्रोध और लोभ उन पर सहज प्रभाव नहीं डाल सकते। तथापि, वे यह भूमिका इसलिए बाँध रही हैं क्योंकि वे आगे यह तर्क देने वाली हैं कि दंडकारण्य में शस्त्र लेकर चलना और बिना बैर के राक्षसों का वध करना, उनके इस संयम के लिए एक कठिन परीक्षा सिद्ध हो सकता है। यह एक पत्नी द्वारा पति के धर्म की रक्षा हेतु की गई विनम्र प्रस्तावना है।
