स च नित्यं प्रशान्तात्मा मृदुपूर्वं तु भाषते ।
उच्यमानोऽपि परुषं नोत्तरं प्रतिपद्यते ॥२-१-१०॥
sa ca nityaṃ praśāntātmā mṛdupūrvaṃ tu bhāṣate |
ucyamāno'pi paruṣaṃ nottaraṃ pratipadyate ॥2-1-10॥
Translation
He possesses an ever-tranquil mind and always speaks softly (initiating speech with kindness). Even when addressed with harsh words, he does not reply with a retort.

वे (श्री राम) नित्य शांत चित्त रहने वाले हैं और सदा मृदु (मधुर) वचन बोलते हैं। यदि कोई उनसे कठोर वचन भी कहता है, तो भी वे पलटकर (वैसा ही) कठोर उत्तर नहीं देते।
English Commentary
This verse expounds upon the linguistic discipline and emotional equanimity of Sri Rama. The descriptor 'nityam praśāntātmā' signifies that his calmness was not momentary but his constant nature; his inner self remained undisturbed by the waves of anger or ego. This suggests a mastery over the mind that is essential for a ruler.
Sage Valmiki highlights a specific facet of his nobility: his reaction to provocation. In a world where warriors often prided themselves on quick retaliation, Rama stood apart. Even when spoken to harshly ('parusham') by others, he did not descend to their level to offer a sharp retort. This immense forbearance indicates a conquest over the ego. अयोध्याकाण्ड के इस श्लोक में महर्षि वाल्मीकि प्रभु श्री राम के 'वाक-संयम' और 'क्षमा-भाव' का अद्भुत चित्रण कर रहे हैं। 'नित्यं प्रशान्तात्मा' का अर्थ है कि राम का मन कभी भी काम, क्रोध या अहंकार के आवेगों से विक्षुब्ध नहीं होता; वे सदैव स्थिर-चित्त रहते हैं। एक भावी राजा के लिए मानसिक संतुलन का यह गुण अनिवार्य है।
