महीधरसमो धृत्यां मत्तश्च गुणवत्तरः ।
महीमहमिमां कृत्स्नामधितिष्ठन्तमात्मजम् ॥ ॥२-१-३९॥
mahīdharasamo dhṛtyāṃ mattaśca guṇavattaraḥ |
mahīmahamimāṃ kṛtsnāmadhitiṣṭhantamātmajam ॥2-1-39॥
Translation
He [Rama] is equal to a mountain in fortitude (steadfastness) and is possessed of more virtues than even myself. [I long to see] my son governing this entire earth.

वे (श्री राम) धैर्य (धृति) में पर्वत के समान हैं और मुझसे भी अधिक गुणवान हैं। (मेरी अभिलाषा है कि) मैं अपने उस पुत्र को इस संपूर्ण पृथ्वी (राज्य) का शासन करते हुए देखूँ।
English Commentary
In this verse from the Ayodhya Kanda, King Dasharatha continues his assessment of Sri Rama, highlighting his temperamental suitability for the throne. He compares Rama to a Mahidhara (mountain) in dhrti (fortitude or steadfastness). This implies that like a mountain, Rama remains unshaken by adversity and possesses the immense emotional strength required to bear the burden of statecraft without wavering.
Significantly, Dasharatha displays rare humility and objectivity by stating Rama is mattashca gunavattarah—'more virtuous than even me.' It is a moment of supreme pride for a father to acknowledge his son's superiority over himself. Dasharatha recognizes that Rama's virtues have eclipsed his own, making him the ideal successor. The verse culminates in Dasharatha's vision of Rama adhitishthantam (presiding over) the krtsnam mahim (entire earth). This confirms that Dasharatha sees Rama not just as a local heir, but as a sovereign capable of universal benevolence, whose stability and superior qualities ensure the welfare of the entire world.

वाल्मीकि रामायण के अयोध्याकाण्ड का यह श्लोक महाराज दशरथ की निष्पक्ष दृष्टि और पुत्र-प्रेम का अद्भुत उदाहरण है। यहाँ दशरथ जी श्री राम की तुलना 'महीधर' (पर्वत) से करते हैं। जैसे पर्वत आंधी-तूफान में भी अचल रहता है और पृथ्वी का भार वहन करता है, वैसे ही राम 'धृति' (धैर्य और दृढ़ता) में अडिग हैं। सबसे महत्त्वपूर्ण बात यह है कि एक चक्रवर्ती सम्राट होते हुए भी दशरथ जी स्वीकार करते हैं कि राम 'मत्तश्च गुणवत्तरः' (मुझसे भी अधिक गुणवान) हैं।
सामान्यतः पिता या राजा अपने से श्रेष्ठ किसी को आसानी से नहीं मानते, किन्तु यहाँ दशरथ जी का यह कथन राम की लोकोत्तर योग्यता को प्रमाणित करता है। वे राम को केवल अयोध्या का नहीं, अपितु 'कृत्स्नाम् महीम्' (समस्त पृथ्वी) का अधिपति बनते हुए देखना चाहते हैं। दशरथ जी आश्वस्त हैं कि राम का चरित्र, संयम और उनसे बढ़कर जो गुण हैं, वे ही इस विशाल साम्राज्य को संभालने में सक्षम हैं।
