अपश्यन् दयितां भार्यां पप्रच्छ विषसाद च ।
न ही तस्य पुरा देवी तां वेलामत्यवर्तत ॥ ॥२-१०-१८॥
Apaśyan dayitāṃ bhāryāṃ papraccha viṣasāda ca । Na hī tasya purā devī tāṃ velāmatyavartata ॥ ॥2-10-18॥
Translation
Not seeing his beloved wife, he asked (about her) and became dejected; for previously, the Queen had never missed that specific hour (of his visit).

अपनी प्यारी पत्नी को न देखकर उन्होंने (सेवकों से) पूछा और वे विषाद (दुख) से भर गए, क्योंकि इससे पहले वह देवी (कैकेयी) कभी उस समय (राजा के आगमन के समय) को नहीं टालती थीं।
English Commentary
Dasharatha's reaction is immediate dejection (viṣasāda). This isn't just a missed appointment; it is a disruption of a deeply established pattern. The verse explains that Kaikeyi never previously transgressed the velā (time/hour) of his visit. This deviation from routine signals to Dasharatha that something is wrong. It highlights the discipline of their relationship and how attentive Kaikeyi usually was to him, which makes her current absence calculated and alarming. His immediate sadness reveals his emotional dependency on her presence.

दशरथ का 'विषाद' (दुख/उदासी) तत्काल है। यह मात्र पत्नी की अनुपस्थिति नहीं है, बल्कि एक अनहोनी का संकेत है। श्लोक का दूसरा भाग बताता है कि कैकेयी का व्यवहार पहले कैसा था—वह हमेशा राजा के आगमन के समय ('वेलाम्') का ध्यान रखती थी और उपस्थित रहती थी। दिनचर्या का यह उल्लंघन राजा को चिंतित कर देता है। यह दर्शाता है कि उनके बीच का संबंध कितना गहरा और नियमित था। दशरथ का तुरंत उदास हो जाना उनके मन में कैकेयी के प्रति अत्यधिक निर्भरता को भी दर्शाता है।
