न च राजा गृहं शून्यं प्रविवेश कदाचन ।
ततो गृहगतो राजा कैकेयीं पर्यपृच्छत ॥ ॥२-१०-१९॥
Na ca rājā gṛhaṃ śūnyaṃ praviveśa kadācana । Tato gṛhagato rājā kaikeyīṃ paryapṛcchata ॥ ॥2-10-19॥
Translation
The King had never before entered that house when it was empty. Therefore, having entered the abode, the King inquired about Kaikeyi.
हिंदी अनुवाद
राजा ने (पहले) कभी भी उस घर (कक्ष) में सूनापन नहीं देखा था (या सूने घर में प्रवेश नहीं किया था)। तब राजा ने घर के भीतर जाकर कैकेयी के बारे में पूछताछ की।
English Commentary
The word śūnyaṃ (empty/void) resonates on two levels: the physical emptiness of the room and the sudden void in Dasharatha's expectations. Since he had never experienced an empty chamber before, he is confused and unsettled. He begins to ask around (paryapṛcchata) actively. This desperate inquiry marks the transition from anticipation to dread. The contrast between his royal status and his frantic search for his wife illustrates how personal attachment transcends public power. He is lost in his own home.

'शून्यं' (खाली/सूना) शब्द यहाँ केवल भौतिक अनुपस्थिति नहीं, बल्कि राजा के हृदय की शून्यता को भी प्रतिध्वनित करता है। दशरथ की स्मृति में ऐसा कोई प्रसंग नहीं था जब कैकेयी वहां न हो। यह अभूतपूर्व स्थिति उन्हें विचलित करती है। वे केवल देखते नहीं, बल्कि सक्रिय रूप से 'पर्यपृच्छत' (चारों ओर पूछने लगे) करते हैं। यह उनकी बेचैनी को दर्शाता है। वे एक बच्चे की तरह व्याकुल हैं जो अपनी माँ या रक्षक को न पाकर घबरा जाता है, जबकि वे स्वयं एक चक्रवर्ती सम्राट हैं।
