Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
यथापुरमविज्ञाय स्वार्थलिप्सुमपण्डिताम् ।
प्रतीहारी त्वथोवाच संत्रस्ता तु कृताञ्जलिः ॥ ॥२-१०-२०॥
Yathāpuramavijñāya svārthalipsumapaṇḍitām । Pratīhārī tvathovāca saṃtrastā tu kṛtāñjaliः ॥ ॥2-10-20॥
Translation
Not knowing that she (Kaikeyi) had become greedy for self-interest and unwise, but thinking of her as before, the terrified door-keeper spoke with folded hands.

राजा को पहले की तरह (प्रेममय) समझकर, और यह न जानते हुए कि कैकेयी अब स्वार्थ-लोलुप और मूर्खतापूर्ण व्यवहार कर रही है, डरी हुई प्रतिहारी (द्वारपालिका) ने हाथ जोड़कर कहा।
English Commentary
This verse provides the narrator's moral judgment on Kaikeyi, labeling her svārthalipsum (greedy for self-interest) and apaṇḍitām (unwise/lacking judgment). Dasharatha, however, is ignorant of this change, viewing her yathāpuram (as before). The doorkeeper (pratīhārī) is terrified (saṃtrastā). Her fear likely stems from having witnessed Kaikeyi's rage and dreading the King's reaction to the news. She stands with folded hands, a gesture of submission and plea for mercy, as she prepares to deliver the message that will shatter the King's world.

यह श्लोक बहुत महत्वपूर्ण है। यहाँ वाल्मीकि कैकेयी के लिए कठोर विशेषणों का प्रयोग करते हैं: 'स्वार्थलिप्सुम्' (अपने मतलब की प्यासी) और 'अपण्डिताम्' (अविवेकपूर्ण/मूर्ख)। राजा दशरथ अभी भी उसे 'यथापुरम्' (पहले जैसी) ही समझ रहे हैं। प्रतिहारी 'संत्रस्ता' (डरी हुई) है—शायद इसलिए कि वह कैकेयी का क्रोध देख चुकी है और जानती है कि राजा को यह खबर देने पर क्या प्रतिक्रिया होगी। सेविका की स्थिति दयनीय है, वह दो शक्तिशाली व्यक्तियों के बीच के तूफान को देख रही है।
