Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
किन्नरीमिव निर्धूतां च्युतामप्सरसं यथा ।
मायामिव परिभ्रष्टां हरिणीमिव संयताम् ॥ ॥२-१०-२५॥
Kinnarīmiva nirdhūtāṃ cyutāmapsarasaṃ yathā । Māyāmiva paribhraṣṭāṃ hariṇīmiva saṃyatām ॥ ॥2-10-25॥
Translation
She looked like a cast-out Kinnari, a fallen Apsara, an illusion gone awry, or a captured doe.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वह (स्वर्ग से) निकाली गई किन्नरी की तरह, नीचे गिरी हुई अप्सरा की तरह, भ्रमित माया (जादू) की तरह और जाल में फंसी हुई हिरणी की तरह लग रही थी।
English Commentary
Valmiki employs four similes to describe Kaikeyi, creating a picture of fallen grace. Comparison to a Kinnari or Apsara emphasizes her unearthly beauty even in distress. However, the simile māyāmiva (like an illusion) is subtle narrator commentary—hinting that her grief is manufactured, a performance or trickery. The comparison to a hariṇī (doe) entrapped is designed to provoke the protective instinct of the "hunter" king. She projects vulnerability perfectly, hiding the predator within her. Dasharatha sees the "trapped doe" but fails to see the "illusion" (Maya) at play.

कैकेयी की दशा का वर्णन करने के लिए चार उपमाएं दी गई हैं। 'हरिणीमिव संयताम्' (बंधी हुई हिरणी) विशेष रूप से महत्वपूर्ण है, क्योंकि हिरणी अपनी बड़ी आँखों और मासूमियत के लिए जानी जाती है। कैकेयी ने जानबूझकर ऐसा वेश बनाया है ताकि राजा को दया आए। 'मायामिव' (माया की तरह) शब्द संकेत देता है कि यह सब एक भ्रम है, नाटक है। वह वास्तव में दुखी नहीं है, बल्कि एक भूमिका निभा रही है। दशरथ इस 'माया' को नहीं समझ पाते और उसके बाहरी रूप पर मोहित होकर दयार्द्र हो जाते हैं।
