Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
क्रेणुमिव दिग्धेन विद्धां मृगयुना वने ।
महागज इन्वारण्ये स्नेहात्परिममर्श ताम् ॥ ॥२-१०-२६॥
Kareṇumiva digdhena viddhāṃ mṛgayunā vane । Mahāgaja ivāraṇye snehātparimamarśa tām ॥ ॥2-10-26॥
Translation
Like a female elephant in the forest pierced by a hunter with a poisoned arrow, the Great Elephant (Dasharatha) touched her with affection.
हिंदी अनुवाद
जैसे वन में शिकारी द्वारा विषैले बाण से मारी गई हथिनी हो, वैसे ही उस (कैकेयी) को देखकर महागज (दशरथ) ने जंगल में स्नेहपूर्वक उसे स्पर्श किया।
English Commentary
The metaphor of the elephant couple (Mahāgaja and Kareṇu) elevates the scene to majestic proportions. Dasharatha perceives Kaikeyi as wounded by a "poisoned arrow" (digdhena), assuming she is the victim of some external cruelty. The irony is palpable: the "poison" is indeed present, but it is the poison of ambition injected by Manthara into Kaikeyi's mind, not an injury inflicted upon her. Dasharatha, the mighty protector, caresses her with affection (snehāt), unaware that the "wounded elephant" he is comforting is about to deal him a fatal blow.

यहाँ दशरथ की तुलना 'महागज' (विशाल हाथी) और कैकेयी की तुलना 'करेणु' (हथिनी) से की गई है। यह रूपक उनके संबंध की गंभीरता और राजसी प्रकृति को दर्शाता है। 'दिग्धेन' का अर्थ है 'विष बुझा बाण'। दशरथ को लगता है कि किसी ने कैकेयी को कटु वचन रूपी विषैले बाणों से घायल किया है। विडंबना यह है कि वह 'विष' मंथरा ने कैकेयी के कान में भरा है, और अब कैकेयी वही विष दशरथ पर प्रयोग करने वाली है। राजा का स्पर्श 'स्नेहात्' (प्रेमवश) है, जो उनकी कोमलता और आगामी विश्वासघात के बीच के अंतर को गहरा करता है।
