Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
आत्मनो जीवितेनापि ब्रुहि यन्मनसेच्छसि ।
बलमात्मनि जानन्ती न मां शङ्कितुमर्हसि ॥ ॥२-१०-३५॥
Ātmano jīvitenāpi brūhi yanmanasecchasi । Balamātmani jānantī na māṃ śaṅkitumarhasi ॥ ॥2-10-35॥
Translation
I swear even by my own life; tell me what you desire in your mind. Knowing the power you hold over me, you ought not to doubt me.
हिंदी अनुवाद
मुझे अपने प्राणों की शपथ है, तुम वह बताओ जो तुम्हारे मन में है। मेरे ऊपर अपने प्रभाव (बल) को जानती हुई तुम्हें मुझ पर शंका नहीं करनी चाहिए।
English Commentary
Dasharatha raises the stakes by swearing on his own life (ātmano jīvitenāpi). He explicitly acknowledges her balam (power/influence) over him. He interprets her silence as hesitation or doubt, urging her to speak freely. Tragically, he misreads the situation. Kaikeyi isn't silent out of doubt; she is silent out of strategy. She is letting him commit himself deeper and deeper into a binding promise before she drops the hammer. He is practically begging to be trapped.

दशरथ अब अपने जीवन की शपथ ('आत्मनो जीवितेनापि') ले रहे हैं। यह एक बहुत बड़ी प्रतिज्ञा है। वे कैकेयी को याद दिला रहे हैं कि वह अपना 'बल' जानती है—वह बल जो राजा के हृदय पर उसके अधिकार से आता है। दशरथ को लग रहा है कि कैकेयी शायद संकोच कर रही है, इसलिए वे उसे विश्वास दिलाना चाहते हैं। विडंबना यह है कि कैकेयी को दशरथ की निष्ठा पर कोई शंका नहीं है; वह तो बस उन्हें एक ऐसे जाल में फंसा रही है जिससे वे चाहकर भी निकल न सकें।
