English Commentary
Kaikeyi contemplates the path to her own happiness ('ātmasukhāvaham'), but her definition of happiness has been warped—it no longer lies in Rama’s joy, but in Bharata’s power. Meanwhile, Manthara is described as 'arthakāmā' (desirous of wealth/gain). This clarifies their motivations: Kaikeyi is driven by misguided maternal ambition, while Manthara is driven by personal gain and rewards. This verse sets the stage for the successful culmination of their conspiracy.
