कथञ्चिदभिविज्ञाय विवर्णवदनं कृशम् ।
भ्रातरं भरतं राम: परिजग्राह बाहुना ॥ ॥२-१००-२॥
Kathañcidabhivijñāya vivarṇavadanaṃ kṛśam। Bhrātaraṃ bharataṃ rāmaḥ parijagrāha bāhunā ॥ ॥2-100-2॥
Translation
Recognizing with difficulty his brother Bharata, whose face was pale and whose body was emaciated, Rama clasped him with his arms.
हिंदी अनुवाद
विवर्ण (उतरे हुए रंग वाले) मुख और दुर्बल शरीर वाले भाई भरत को किसी तरह (कठिनाई से) पहचानकर, राम ने उन्हें अपनी भुजाओं में भर लिया।
English Commentary
This verse underscores the physical toll of emotional trauma. The phrase kathanchidabhivijnaya (recognizing with difficulty) is strikingly tragic—it implies that Bharata has changed so drastically in appearance due to fasting and grief that he is barely recognizable even to Rama. His face is pale (vivarna) and body thin (krisham). Rama’s reaction is immediate and physical; he pulls Bharata into an embrace, a gesture of grounding and comfort. This moment marks the transition from the shock of seeing the "ascetic form" to the tender recognition of the beloved brother beneath the matted hair.
