आघ्राय रामस्तं मूर्ध्नि परिष्वज्य च राघव: ।
अङ्के भरतमारोप्य पर्यपृच्छत् समाहितः ॥ ॥२-१००-३॥
Āghrāya rāmastaṃ mūrdhni pariṣvajya ca rāghavaḥ। Aṅke bharatamāropya paryapṛcchat samāhitaḥ ॥ ॥2-100-3॥
Translation
Having smelt him on the crown of his head and embraced him, Raghava (Rama) placed Bharata on his lap and, with a focused mind, questioned him.

रघुकुल नन्दन राम नेभरत का मस्तक सूंघकर और उन्हें गले लगाकर, फिर अपनी गोद में बैठाकर एकाग्रचित्त हो उनसे पूछा।
English Commentary
This verse describes traditional gestures of intimacy and affection. "Smelling the head" (aghraya murdhni) is an ancient indic idiom of deep affection, often equivalent to or exceeding a kiss on the forehead, signifying protection and blessing from an elder. Placing Bharata on his lap signifies that Rama views him with paternal affection. However, the word samahitah (composed/focused) is crucial here. It indicates that Rama quickly gathered his wits. Despite the emotional reunion, his sense of duty and his sharp intellect awakened, preparing him to ask the necessary and difficult questions regarding the kingdom and their father.
