Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
कच्चित्त्वां नावजानन्ति याजका: पतितं यथा ।
उग्रप्रतिग्रहीतारं कामयानमिव स्त्रिय: ॥ ॥२-१००-२९॥
Kaccittvāṃ nāvajānanti yājakāḥ patitaṃ yathā । Ugrapratigrahitāraṃ kāmayānamiva striyaḥ ॥ ॥2-100-29॥
Translation
Do the priests not disregard you as they would a fallen man? (Do they disregard you) as women disregard a lustful man, thinking of you as a receiver of terrible/unjust gifts?

क्या (यज्ञ कराने वाले) ऋत्विक तुम्हारा वैसा अनादर तो नहीं करते जैसा वे किसी पतित (पापी) व्यक्ति का करते हैं? या जैसे स्त्रियाँ किसी ऐसे कामी पुरुष का अनादर करती हैं जो (अनुचित/पापपूर्ण) दान लेने वाला (उग्रप्रतिग्रहीता) हो?
English Commentary
This verse deals with the moral standing of the King. Ugrapratigrahitaram refers to one who accepts prohibited or terrible gifts (bribes, unjust taxes, or tainted money). Rama asks if the priests shun Bharata like a Patita (outcaste/sinner) because of such greed. The simile of women disregarding a lustful man (kamayanam) suggests that just as a woman feels repulsed by the advances of a man she knows to be devoid of dignity or character, the spiritual elite and the public feel repulsed by a greedy King. Financial corruption leads to social and spiritual ostracization.

इस श्लोक का अर्थ गूढ़ है। 'उग्रप्रतिग्रहीतारं' का अर्थ है ऐसा राजा जो प्रजा से अन्यायपूर्वक धन वसूलता है या पाप की कमाई लेता है। यदि राजा भ्रष्ट है, तो सात्विक पुरोहित (याजक) उसका सम्मान नहीं करते, वे उसे 'पतित' मानते हैं। उपमा दी गई है 'कामयानमिव स्त्रिय:'—जैसे स्त्रियाँ उस पुरुष से घृणा करती हैं जो उन पर आसक्त है लेकिन जिसका चरित्र या व्यवहार घृणित है (यहाँ उग्रप्रतिग्रहीता का संबंध दोनों उपमाओं से हो सकता है)। भाव यह है कि राजा को अपने नैतिक चरित्र की रक्षा करनी चाहिए ताकि समाज के धर्मगुरु और स्त्रियाँ उसका सम्मान करें।
