चिरस्य बत पश्यामि दूराद्भरतमागतम् ।
दुष्प्रतीकमरण्ये ऽस्मिन् किं तात वनमागत: ॥ ॥२-१००-५॥
Cirasya bata paśyāmi dūrādbharatamāgatam। Duṣpratīkamaraṇye ’smin kiṃ tāta vanamāgataḥ ॥ ॥2-100-5॥
Translation
Alas! I see Bharata arrived from afar after a long time. Oh dear one, why have you come to this forest appearing so wretched?
हिंदी अनुवाद
बड़े खेद की बात है कि बहुत समय बाद मैं भरत को दूर से आया हुआ देख रहा हूँ। हे तात! इस वन में तुम दीन-हीन वेश (दुष्प्रतीक) धारण कर क्यों आए हो?
English Commentary
Rama expresses his distress with the word bata (alas). While he sees his brother after a long time (cirasya), the visual is disturbing (dushpratikam - having a bad or wretched appearance). Rama is struggling to reconcile the image of the regal brother he left behind with the emaciated ascetic before him. The repetition of the inquiry "Why have you come?" underscores Rama's anxiety. He realizes that this journey was not a casual visit but driven by some desperate necessity or tragedy.

यहाँ 'बत' (खेद/विस्मय) शब्द राम के अंतर्मन की पीड़ा को व्यक्त करता है। 'दुष्प्रतीक' का अर्थ है जिसका दर्शन या रूप दुखद हो गया हो। राम को भरत का आगमन सुखद लगना चाहिए था, लेकिन भरत की दशा देखकर वह मिलन विषाद में बदल गया है। राम बार-बार 'किं' (क्यों) पूछ रहे हैं, जो उनकी घबराहट को दर्शाता है। वे भरत के आगमन का कारण जानने के लिए व्याकुल हैं, क्योंकि सामान्य परिस्थितियों में अयोध्या के राजकुमार का ऐसा रूप असंभव है।
