कच्चिद्दशरथो राजा कुशली सत्यसङ्गर: ।
राजसूयाश्वमेधानामाहर्त्ता धर्मनिश्चय: ॥ ॥२-१००-९॥
Kacciddaśaratho rājā kuśalī satyasaṅgaraḥ। Rājasūyāśvamedhānāmāharttā dharmaniścayaḥ ॥ ॥2-100-9॥
Translation
Is King Dasaratha well—he who is true to his promises, the performer of Rajasuya and Ashwamedha sacrifices, and steadfast in Dharma?

क्या राजा दशरथ कुशल हैं, जो अपनी प्रतिज्ञा के प्रति सच्चे (सत्यसङ्गर:) हैं, राजसूय और अश्वमेध यज्ञों को करने वाले हैं, और धर्म में जिनका निश्चय दृढ़ है?
English Commentary
Rama lists the credentials of King Dasaratha, almost as a prayer for his longevity. He mentions the Rajasuya and Ashwamedha, the supreme Vedic sacrifices indicative of an emperor's sovereignty and piety. Describing him as Dharmanishchayah (one whose resolve is Dharma), Rama validates Dasaratha's decision to banish him. By asking "Is he kushali (well)?", coupled with these high adjectives, Rama contrasts the glorious stature of the King with the fragility of human life. It shows Rama's immense respect for the father who exiled him.

इस श्लोक में राम अपने पिता के महान गुणों और उपलब्धियों का स्मरण करते हैं। 'राजसूय' और 'अश्वमेध' यज्ञ केवल चक्रवर्ती राजा ही कर सकते हैं। इन यज्ञों का उल्लेख करके राम पिता की महानता और पुण्य-बल को याद कर रहे हैं, मानो वे सोच रहे हों कि इतना पुण्य करने वाले राजा को कोई अमंगल नहीं होना चाहिए। 'सत्यसङ्गर:' (सत्य प्रतिज्ञ) फिर से उसी बात को दोहराता है कि दशरथ ने धर्म के लिए राम को त्यागा। राम पिता के स्वास्थ्य (कुशली) के बारे में पूछते समय उनके धर्म और यश को ढाल की तरह देखते हैं।
