सीते मृतस्ते श्वशुर: पित्रा हीनो ऽसि लक्ष्मण ।
भरतो दु:खमाचष्टे स्वर्गतं पृथिवीपतिम् ॥ ॥२-१०२-१५॥
Sīte mṛtaste śvaśuraḥ pitrā hīno 'si lakṣmaṇa । Bharato duḥkhamācaṣṭe svargataṃ pṛthivīpatim ॥ ॥2-102-15॥
Translation
"O Sita, your father-in-law is dead; O Lakshmana, you are bereft of your father. Bharata reports the sad news that the Lord of the Earth has gone to heaven."

"हे सीते! तुम्हारे श्वसुर का देहांत हो गया है। हे लक्ष्मण! तुम पितृहीन हो गए हो। भरत ने दुखद समाचार दिया है कि पृथ्वीपति (राजा) स्वर्ग सिधार गए हैं।"
English Commentary
Rama breaks the news without euphemisms to his closest kin. Addressing Sita regarding her father-in-law and Lakshmana regarding his father, he personalizes the loss for each. Telling Lakshmana "You are bereft of a father" is poignant because Lakshmana is devoted to Rama as a father figure, yet the biological loss remains. Rama cites Bharata as the source, validating the truth of the message. The breakdown of the news acknowledges the specific relationship each listener had with the King.
