Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
सीता पुरस्ताद्व्रजतुत्वमेनामभितो व्रज ।
अहं पश्चाद्गमिष्यामि गतिर्ह्येषा सुदारुणा ॥ ॥२-१०२-२१॥
Sītā purastādvrajatu tvamenāmabhito vraja । Ahaṃ paścādgamiṣyāmi gatirhyeṣā sudāruṇā ॥ ॥2-102-21॥
Translation
Let Sita walk in front, and you walk beside her. I shall follow behind, for this path is indeed very difficult and rugged.
हिंदी अनुवाद
सीता आगे चलें, तुम (लक्ष्मण) उनके साथ चलो। मैं तुम दोनों के पीछे चलूँगा, क्योंकि यह मार्ग अत्यन्त कठिन और दुर्गम है।
English Commentary
This verse illustrates Rama's protective nature and situational awareness. The descent to the riverbank is treacherous ('sudaruna'). Rama orchestrates their movement strategically: Sita, being the most delicate and unaccustomed to such rugged terrain, goes first, flanked by protection, while Rama guards the rear to oversee the safety of the entire group. It reflects the harsh reality of their forest life compared to the palace comforts, yet highlights that Rama’s courtesy and sense of responsibility remain regal and unwavering even in the wild.

यहाँ श्रीराम की अपने परिजनों के प्रति सुरक्षात्मक दृष्टि और नेतृत्व का परिचय मिलता है। मंदाकिनी नदी की ओर जाने वाला मार्ग फिसलन भरा और दुर्गम ('सुदारुणा') है। वनवास के कठिन जीवन में अभ्यस्त न होने के कारण सीता को विशेष सुरक्षा की आवश्यकता है। राम निर्देश देते हैं कि सीता सबसे आगे रहें ताकि वे स्वयं और लक्ष्मण दोनों उन पर दृष्टि रख सकें। भारतीय शिष्टाचार में प्रायः पुरुषों का स्त्रियों के पीछे चलना सुरक्षा की दृष्टि से उचित माना गया है। यह श्लोक वन के कठोर यथार्थ और राम के दायित्वबोध का मिश्रण है।
