Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
ते सुतीर्थां तत: कृच्छ्रादुपागम्य यशस्विन: ।
नदीं मन्दाकिनीं रम्यां सदा पुष्पितकाननाम् ॥ ॥२-१०२-२४॥
Te sutīrthāṃ tataḥ kṛcchrādupāgamya yaśasvinaḥ । Nadīṃ mandākinīṃ ramyāṃ sadā puṣpitakānanām ॥ ॥2-102-24॥
Translation
Then, those illustrious ones, with great difficulty, reached the beautiful river Mandakini, which possessed good ghats (landing places) and forests that were always in bloom.
हिंदी अनुवाद
तदनन्तर वे यशस्वी (राम, भरत आदि) बड़ी कठिनाई से उस रमणीय मंदाकिनी नदी के पास पहुँचे, जिसके घाट सुंदर थे और जिसके वन सदैव फूलों से लदे रहते थे।
English Commentary
This verse juxtaposes the serene beauty of nature with the internal turmoil of the characters. The Mandakini is described as 'ramyam' (delightful) with 'sutirtham' (accessible banks) and blooming forests, painting a picture of eternal spring. However, the princes reach it 'krichchhrat' (with great difficulty/pain). This difficulty is likely psychosomatic—the weight of grief making every step arduous. The term 'yashasvinah' (the illustrious ones) reminds the reader of their high status, heightening the pathos of seeing such noble souls in deep distress, seeking solace in the wild.

यहाँ प्रकृति के सौंदर्य और राम के कष्ट का विरोधाभास (contrast) दर्शनीय है। मंदाकिनी 'रम्य' (सुंदर) है, वन 'पुष्पित' हैं, और घाट 'सुतीर्थ' (अच्छे) हैं, परन्तु राम और उनके भाइयों के लिए वहाँ तक पहुँचना 'कृच्छ्राद' (अत्यन्त कष्टदायक) है। यह कष्ट मार्ग की भौतिक कठिनाई से अधिक उनके मन के भारीपन के कारण है। 'यशस्विन:' विशेषण का प्रयोग विडंबना और सम्मान दोनों को दर्शाता है—वे विश्वविख्यात वीर हैं, फिर भी आज नियति ने उन्हें इस दुखद स्थिति में ला खड़ा किया है जहाँ वे वनवासी के रूप में तर्पण करने जा रहे हैं।
