प्रगृह्य च महीपालो जलपूरितमञ्जलिम् ।
दिशं याम्यामभिमुखो रुदन् वचनमब्रवीत् ॥ ॥२-१०२-२६॥
Pragṛhya ca mahīpālo jalapūritamañjalim । Diśaṃ yāmyāmabhimukho rudan vacanamabravīt ॥ ॥2-102-26॥
Translation
The King (Rama), holding a hollowed palm full of water, facing the southern direction, spoke these words while weeping.

राजा (राम) ने जल से भरी हुई अंजलि को ग्रहण कर, दक्षिण दिशा (यम की दिशा) की ओर मुख करके, रोते हुए यह वचन कहा।
English Commentary
Rama is referred to here as 'Mahipala' (Protector of the Earth), subtly acknowledging his rightful status as King following Dasharatha's death. Facing the 'Yamyam disham' (the South, the direction of Yama, the Lord of Death) is scripturally mandatory for ancestral rites. The image of Rama weeping ('rudan') while holding the water offering is iconic. It strips away the veneer of divinity to reveal a grieving son. The act is solemn, following strict directionality and protocol, yet saturated with raw human emotion.
