Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
इदं भुङ्क्ष्व महाराज प्रीतो यदशना वयम् ।
यदन्न: पुरुषो भवति तदन्नास्तस्य देवता: ॥ ॥२-१०२-३०॥
Idaṃ bhuṅkṣva mahārāja prīto yadaśanā vayam । Yadannaḥ puruṣo bhavati tadannāstasya devatāḥ ॥ ॥2-102-30॥
Translation
"Eat this, O Great King, and be pleased. We offer what we ourselves eat; for verily, the deities (ancestors) of a person partake of the same food that the person eats."
हिंदी अनुवाद
"हे महाराज! प्रसन्न होकर इसे ग्रहण करें। जो भोजन हम करते हैं, (विवश होकर) वही आपको अर्पित कर रहे हैं; क्योंकि मनुष्य जैसा अन्न स्वयं खाता है, उसके देवता (पितर) भी वही अन्न ग्रहण करते हैं।"
English Commentary
This verse contains a timeless philosophical maxim: "Yadannah purusho bhavati tadannastasya devatah" (Whatever food a man eats, his gods/ancestors accept the same). It acts as both an apology and a justification. Rama pleads with the "Maharaja" to accept the wild pulp with love ('prito'), acknowledging the stark contrast between his father's status and the offering. It underscores the concept that in spirituality and rituals, the substance is secondary to the circumstance and sincerity of the offerer. It is a heart-rending admission of his current destitute reality.

यह श्लोक एक शाश्वत सिद्धांत और राम की विवशता दोनों को व्यक्त करता है। राम क्षमाप्रार्थी भाव से कहते हैं—यदन्न: पुरुषो भवति तदन्नास्तस्य देवता: (मनुष्य जो खाता है, उसके देवता भी वही स्वीकार करते हैं)। यह वाक्य वाल्मीकि रामायण के सबसे प्रसिद्ध सूक्तियों में से एक है। राम दशरथ को 'महाराज' कहकर संबोधित करते हैं, जो इंगुदी के तुच्छ भोजन के साथ भारी विरोधाभास उत्पन्न करता है। राम यह निवेदन करते हैं कि पिता इस वन-भोजन को प्रेमपूर्वक ('प्रीतो') स्वीकार करें, वस्तु के मूल्य को न देखें, अपितु भाव को देखें।
