Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
हयैरन्ये गजैरन्ये रथैरन्ये स्वलङ्कृतै: ।
सुकुमारास्तथैवान्ये पद्भिरेव नरा ययु: ॥ ॥२-१०२-३७॥
Hayairanye gajairanye rathairanye svalaṅkṛtaiḥ । Sukumārāstathaivānye padbhireva narā yayuḥ ॥ ॥2-102-37॥
Translation
Some went on horses, others on elephants, others on decorated chariots; and even those who were tender (unused to walking) went on foot.
हिंदी अनुवाद
कोई घोड़ों पर, कोई हाथियों पर, और कोई सुसज्जित रथों पर सवार होकर गए; तथा अन्य सुकुमार (कोमल शरीर वाले) लोग पैदल ही चल पड़े।
English Commentary
This verse depicts the chaotic urgency of the pilgrimage to Rama. It paints a picture of a diverse exodus: cavalry, elephant riders, and charioteers rushing forward. The most poignant detail is 'sukumaras' (the delicate/tender ones)—likely the wealthy citizens or ladies accustomed to luxury—walking on the rugged terrain ('padbhireva') because they couldn't wait for transport. It underscores the power of their devotion; physical discomfort becomes irrelevant when the goal is seeing Rama. The hierarchy of transport remains, but the destination and the haste equalize everyone.

यह श्लोक भीड़ की विविधता और उनकी व्याकुलता का वर्णन करता है। जिसके हाथ जो वाहन लगा—घोड़ा, हाथी, रथ—वह उसी पर चल पड़ा। सबसे मर्मस्पर्शी वर्णन 'सुकुमारा:' (कोमल शरीर वाले नागरिकों) का है, जो संभवतः रथों के आदी थे, किन्तु वाहन की प्रतीक्षा किये बिना 'पद्भिरेव' (पैरों से ही) दौड़ पड़े। राम के दर्शन की लालसा ने शारीरिक सुख-दुख की चिंता को समाप्त कर दिया है। 'स्वलङ्कृतै:' (सुसज्जित) रथों का उल्लेख बताता है कि वे तैयारी के साथ आए थे, लेकिन अंतिम क्षण की हड़बड़ी में सब मर्यादाएं टूट गईं।
