Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
स तत्र कांच्चित् परिषस्वजे नरान्नराश्च केचित्तु तमभ्यवादयन् ।
चकार सर्वान् सवयस्य बान्धवान् यथार्हमासाद्य तदा नृपात्मज: ॥ ॥२-१०२-४८॥
Sa tatra kāṃccit pariṣasvaje narānnarāśca kecittu tamabhyavādayan । Cakāra sarvān savayasya bāndhavān yathārhamāsādya tadā nṛpātmajaḥ ॥ ॥2-102-48॥
Translation
There, he embraced some men, while others bowed to him. The Prince approached all his friends and kinsmen, honoring them appropriately according to their status.
हिंदी अनुवाद
वहां राजकुमार राम ने किन्हीं (अपने मित्रों और समान आयु वालों) को गले लगाया और किन्हीं (वृद्धों) ने उनको प्रणाम किया। इस प्रकार उन्होंने मित्र और बन्धुओं का, उनके पास जाकर यथायोग्य सत्कार किया।
English Commentary
Even amidst intense emotion, Rama maintains perfect social etiquette (Maryada). This verse describes how he interacted with the diverse crowd—comprising friends, elders, and commoners—based on protocol. The term yatharham (as deserved/appropriate) is key; he embraced equals and close friends, while exchanging respectful salutations with elders. Though dressed as an ascetic, his conduct remained that of a Nripatmaja (son of a king). It demonstrates that nobility is defined by conduct, not attire, and that true character involves maintaining respect and hierarchy even during times of personal crisis.

भावुकता के क्षणों में भी श्रीराम 'मर्यादा' नहीं भूले। इस श्लोक में सामाजिक शिष्टाचार का सुंदर निर्वाह दिखाया गया है। भीड़ में सभी प्रकार के लोग थे—मित्र, वृद्ध, सेवक और गुरुजन। श्रीराम ने 'यथार्हम्' (जिसका जो अधिकार या योग्यता है) व्यवहार किया। उन्होंने सखाओं को गले लगाया और वयोवृद्धों को प्रणाम किया या उनका प्रणाम स्वीकार किया। वनवासी वेश में होने पर भी उनका आचरण एक कुलीन राजकुमार (नृपात्मज:) के अनुरूप ही था। यह श्लोक सिखाता है कि विपत्ति काल में भी व्यक्ति को अपने संस्कार और सामाजिक मर्यादाओं का त्याग नहीं करना चाहिए।
