रामेणेङ्गुदिपिण्याकं पितुर्दत्तं समीक्ष्य मे ।
कथं दु:खेन हृदयं न स्फोटति सहस्रधा ॥ ॥२-१०३-१४॥
Rāmeṇeṅgudipiṇyākaṃ piturdattaṃ samīkṣya me । Kathaṃ du:khena hṛdayaṃ na sphoṭati sahasradhā ॥ ॥2-103-14॥
Translation
"Seeing the cake of Ingudi pulp offered by Rama to his father, why does my heart not break into a thousand pieces out of grief?"

राम द्वारा पिता को दिया गया यह इंगुदी का पिण्याक देखकर, मेरा हृदय दुःख से हजार टुकड़ों में क्यों नहीं फट जाता?
English Commentary
This verse expresses the extreme limit of human endurance in the face of grief. Kausalya questions her own survival, wondering how her physical heart remains intact despite such emotional devastation. The imagery of the heart bursting into a "thousand pieces" (sahasradhā) conveys the intensity of her anguish. It represents the collision of two tragedies: the destitution of her son and the humiliation of her husband's memory. This is not merely poetic hyperbole but a raw expression of a mother who feels that continuing to live and witness this reality is a torture greater than death.

यह श्लोक भारतीय काव्य परंपरा में शोक की तीव्रता को व्यक्त करने का एक शास्त्रीय रूप है। जब शोक की मात्रा सहनशक्ति से बाहर हो जाती है, तो पात्र अक्सर आश्चर्य करते हैं कि उनके प्राण क्यों नहीं निकल रहे या हृदय विदीर्ण क्यों नहीं हो रहा। कौसल्या का यह कथन अलंकारिक न होकर उनकी वास्तविक शारीरिक और मानसिक पीड़ा का द्योतक है। पुत्र की दीनता और पति की दुर्गति—इन दोनों का संगम उनके हृदय पर वज्रपात के समान है। 'सहस्रधा' (हजार प्रकार से/हजार टुकड़ों में) शब्द उस वेदना के विस्तार को दर्शाता है जो उनके रोम-रोम में व्याप्त हो गई है।
