कौसल्या बाष्पपूर्णेन मुखेन परिशुष्यता ।
सुमित्रामब्रवीद्दीना याश्ऺचान्या राजयोषित: ॥ ॥२-१०३-३॥
Kausalyā bāṣpapūrṇena mukhena pariśuṣyatā । Sumitrāmabravīddīnā yāśca cānyā rājayoṣitaḥ ॥ ॥2-103-3॥
Translation
Kausalya, looking miserable with a withered face bathed in tears, spoke to Sumitra and the other royal wives.
हिंदी अनुवाद
सूखे हुए और आंसुओं से भरे मुख वाली दीन कौसल्या ने सुमित्रा तथा अन्य राजरानियों से कहा।
English Commentary
Kausalya's condition is vividly described: her face is parishushyata (dried/withered) from grief and exhaustion, yet bashpapurna (filled with tears). The juxtaposition of a dried face and wet eyes emphasizes the relentless nature of her sorrow. She is described as Dina (wretched/miserable). She specifically addresses Sumitra, acknowledging the bond they share—not just as co-wives, but as mothers whose sons are suffering together. Addressing Sumitra is also a tacit acknowledgement of Lakshmana’s service, which Kausalya observes with a mixture of pride and pain, prompting the speech in the following verses.

माता कौसल्या की शारीरिक और मानसिक स्थिति का करुण चित्रण यहाँ किया गया है। उनका मुख 'परिशुष्यता' (सूखा हुआ) है, जो निरंतर रोने और उपवास या दुख के कारण शरीर में जल की कमी को दर्शाता है, फिर भी आँखें 'बाष्पपूर्ण' (आंसुओं से भरी) हैं। वह 'दीना' (असहाय) महसूस कर रही हैं। वह मुख्य रूप से सुमित्रा को संबोधित करती हैं। इसका कारण यह है कि लक्ष्मण भी राम के साथ हैं और लक्ष्मण का त्याग और सेवा देखकर कौसल्या सुमित्रा के प्रति कृतज्ञता और सहानुभूति दोनों महसूस करती हैं। यह दो माताओं के बीच के साझा दुःख का संवाद है।
