Srimad Valmiki Ramayana
इतः सुमित्रे पुत्रस्ते सदा जलमतन्द्रित: ।
स्वयं हरति सौमित्रिर्मम पुत्रस्य कारणात् ॥ ॥२-१०३-५॥
Itaḥ sumitre putraste sadā jalamatandritaḥ । Svayaṃ harati saumitrirmama putrasya kāraṇāt ॥ ॥2-103-5॥
Translation
"From here, O Sumitra, your son Lakshmana, tirelessly and without laziness, fetches water himself for the sake of my son."

"हे सुमित्रे! यहाँ से तुम्हारा पुत्र लक्ष्मण, आलस्य छोड़कर (अतन्द्रित:), मेरे पुत्र (राम) के लिए सदा स्वयं पानी ले जाता है।"
English Commentary
Kausalya directs Sumitra’s attention to the physical evidence of Lakshmana's devotion. She notes that Lakshmana fetches water atandritah (without lassitude/tirelessly). The phrase svayam harati (carries it himself) underscores the absence of servants and the physical burden Lakshmana has assumed. By saying he does this "for the sake of my son" (mama putrasya karanat), Kausalya acknowledges that Lakshmana’s hardship is a voluntary sacrifice born of love for Rama. It is a tribute to Lakshmana's character, recognizing that he has traded royal comfort for the hard labor of a forest ascetic to serve his brother.

कौसल्या यहाँ लक्ष्मण की सेवा-भक्ति (कैंकर्य) की प्रशंसा कर रही हैं, लेकिन उसमें भी एक टीस है। वह सुमित्रा को दिखाती हैं कि देखो, तुम्हारा राजकुमार पुत्र अब एक मजदूर की भांति काम कर रहा है। 'अतन्द्रित:' (बिना आलस्य के/जागरूक) शब्द लक्ष्मण की निष्ठा को दिखाता है। वह राम की सेवा में रत्ती भर भी ढील नहीं देते। 'स्वयं हरति' (खुद ढोते हैं) - जहाँ सैकड़ों दास होने चाहिए थे, वहाँ लक्ष्मण स्वयं घड़ा उठा रहे हैं। 'मम पुत्रस्य कारणात्' (मेरे बेटे के कारण) कहकर कौसल्या यह भाव व्यक्त करती हैं कि लक्ष्मण यह कष्ट केवल राम के प्रेम वश उठा रहे हैं।
