जघन्यमपि ते पुत्र: कृतवान्न तु गर्हित: ।
भ्रातुर्यदर्थसहितं सर्वं तद्विहितं गुणै: ॥ ॥२-१०३-६॥
Jaghanyamapi te putraḥ kṛtavānna tu garhitaḥ । Bhrāturyadarthasahitaṃ sarvaṃ tadvihitaṃ guṇaiḥ ॥ ॥2-103-6॥
Translation
"Even though your son performs this menial task, he is not to be blamed. Whatever is done for the sake of a brother is endowed with virtue and is praiseworthy."

"यद्यपि तुम्हारा पुत्र यह छोटा (नीचा) काम कर रहा है, तो भी वह निंदनीय नहीं है; क्योंकि भाई के हित के लिए जो भी किया जाए, वह सब गुणों से युक्त (सराहनीय) ही होता है।"
English Commentary
This verse articulates a profound ethical principle regarding service (Seva). Kausalya admits the task is jaghanyam (menial/lowly) for a prince, but asserts it is na garhitah (not blameworthy). The rationale is that any action performed for the welfare of a revered brother is vihitam gunaih (endowed with merit/virtue). This redefines dignity of labor through the lens of devotion. Kausalya comforts Sumitra, implying that Lakshmana’s manual labor elevates him rather than degrading him, as it acts as a testament to his fraternal love and dharma.

यह श्लोक सेवा-धर्म का मूल मंत्र है। पानी ढोना एक राजकुमार के लिए 'जघन्य' (नीचा/छोटा) कार्य हो सकता है, किन्तु कौसल्या कहती हैं कि लक्ष्मण के लिए यह 'न गर्हित:' (निंदा योग्य नहीं) है। क्यों? क्योंकि यह 'भ्रातुर्यदर्थसहितं' (भाई के हित/प्रयोजन के लिए) किया जा रहा है। प्रेम और भक्ति में किया गया छोटे से छोटा कार्य भी महान गुण बन जाता है। यहाँ कौसल्या सुमित्रा को सांत्वना दे रही हैं कि तुम्हें अपने पुत्र को मजदूर की तरह काम करते देख लज्जित या दुखी नहीं होना चाहिए, बल्कि यह उसका गौरव है। भक्ति में अहंकार का नाश ही सच्ची सेवा है।
