किमेतदिच्छेयमहं श्रोतुं प्रव्याहृतं त्वया ।
यस्मात्त्वमागतो देशमिमं चीरजटाजिनी ॥ ॥२-१०४-२॥
Kimetadiccheyamahaṃ śrotuṃ pravyāhṛtaṃ tvayā । Yasmāttvamāgato deśamimaṃ cīrajaṭājinī ॥ ॥2-104-2॥
Translation
"I wish to hear this spoken by you: for what reason have you come to this region, wearing bark garments, matted hair, and deer skin?"
हिंदी अनुवाद
मैं तुम्हारे मुख से यह सुनना चाहता हूँ कि किस कारण से तुम जटा, वल्कल और मृगचर्म धारण किए हुए (चीरजटाजिनी) इस देश (वन) में आए हो?
English Commentary
Rama cuts straight to the anomaly. As the exiled prince, he expects Bharata to be the ruling monarch, regally attired. Seeing Bharata as a 'cīrajaṭājinī' (one wearing bark, matted locks, and antelope skin) disrupts the natural order. Rama demands an explanation ('pravyāhṛtaṃ tvayā' - spoken by you) for this inversion of roles. He wants to know the 'yasmāt' (cause/reason). It reflects Rama's concern that something catastrophic must have occurred to force the reigning prince into the garb of a forest mendicant.

राम का प्रश्न सीधा और तीखा है। वे भरत को राज्य के शासक के रूप में देखना चाहते थे, न कि तपस्वी के रूप में। 'चीरजटाजिनी' (चीर वस्त्र, जटा और मृगचर्म धारण करने वाला) शब्द राम के विस्मय को दर्शाता है। नियमानुसार, यदि राम वन में हैं, तो भरत को अयोध्या के राजसिंहासन पर होना चाहिए। राम को आशंका है कि कहीं राज्य में कोई बड़ा अनर्थ तो नहीं हो गया जिसके कारण राजा को भी भिक्षु का वेश धरना पड़ा। यह प्रश्न भरत के त्याग को राम द्वारा पहली बार नोटिस किए जाने का प्रमाण है।
