यावत्पितरि धर्मज्ञे गौरवं लोकसत्कृतम् ।
तावद्धर्मभृतां श्रेष्ठ जनन्यामपि गौरवम् ॥ ॥२-१०४-२१॥
Yavatpitari dharmajnye gauravam lokasatkritam |
Tavaddharmabhritam shreshtha jananyamapi gauravम् ॥2-104-21॥
Translation
O best among the upholders of Dharma, as much reverence as is due to the righteous father honored by the world, so much reverence is also due to the mother.
हिंदी अनुवाद
हे धर्मधारियों में श्रेष्ठ! धर्मज्ञ पिता का लोक में जितना सम्मान (गौरव) है, उतना ही गौरव माता का भी होना चाहिए।
English Commentary
Rama reinforces the matricentric aspect of Dharma here. He equates the spiritual weight (gauravam) of the mother to that of the father. Even though the world honors Dasharatha, Rama insists that Kaikeyi commands equal respect and obedience. This is a strategic argument against Bharata's rejection of Kaikeyi's boon. Rama implies that since Kaikeyi asked for the exile and Dasharatha granted it, the command has a dual authority. To disobey the exile is to disrespect both the father and the mother. This shuts down any loophole Bharata might have hoped to find by invalidating Kaikeyi’s authority.
हिंदी टीका
श्रीराम यहाँ एक बहुत बड़ा धर्म-संकट हल करते हैं। भरत का तर्क था कि कैकेयी ने अन्याय किया है, इसलिए उनकी बात नहीं मानी जानी चाहिए। किन्तु श्रीराम कहते हैं कि माता और पिता का स्थान बराबर है। 'धर्मज्ञे' विशेषण पिता के लिए और 'धर्मभृतां श्रेष्ठ' भरत के लिए प्रयोग किया गया है। राम समझा रहे हैं कि यदि हम पिता के वचन से बंधे हैं, तो माता (कैकेयी) के वरदान से भी उतना ही बंधे हैं। माता की आज्ञा को पिता की आज्ञा से कम नहीं तौला जा सकता, भले ही वह अप्रिय क्यों न हो।
